With two games to go Western have an unassailable 11 point lead in the division and have created history for the club being the first Men’s team to secure a division title following on from our ladies team's premiership last year. The premiership has also elevated our Men’s A side into the top echelon of the VCSA. Captained by Neilson the team has broken new ground this season with 13 wins from 15 games. This is no mean feat considering the team must travel a fair distance every fortnight to compete in a competition centred around the outer eastern suburbs and had been beset with a no. of injuries throughout the season. Congratulations to all involved. 2011-06-28 11:22:03 Reminder of Special General Meeting http://www.westernunitedfc.net The meeting is in relation to important changes to incorporation. Playing on a ground that resembled the swamp region inhabited by Yoda, the opening stages of the game were fairly even, with both teams creating a few decent chances. Like a broken record, Western conceded the first goal, failing to deal with a deep cross by the hosts, resulting in a close range header. With United's front line misfiring and the West Papuans constantly threatening on the counter attack, it seemed like not much was going to come off for the visitors. Whilst committing men forward to equalise, West Papua broke on the counter and scored again from long range, with keeper Chincarini out of position. In the dying minutes Western grabbed a consolation goal through Kerbaj, but it was all too little, too late as the hosts progressed to the next round of the Parry Shield, while Western can take it as a well timed kick in the behind, and will be eager to take out vengeance on Glen Eira this weekend at VUT in the league. 2011-05-29 20:04:31 Mens C Through http://www.westernunitedfc.net In perfect late Autumn conditions Western United's Mens C hosted Eltham in the first round of the President's Cup. In what always promised to be a difficult games for both sides it was Western who prevailed courtesy of another superb 2 goal effort from Reddy & to fist time goal scorers in Western colours Rimmington & Ajeic. Starting the game with 4 certain starters promoted it was Western who burst the game open with a three goal frenzy in nearly as many minutes half way through the first half. After this it was Western's turn to be on the back foot from a plucky Eltham side to about the 75th minute when Ajeic all but sealed the game. It wasn't a pretty affair but it was a win with a lot of heart for Western. Next week Western Mens C face the big road trip to face a 2nd placed Healesville. 2011-05-22 13:18:12 Knoxed Off http://www.westernunitedfc.net Mens C continued their northbound journey up the Div 5 ladder with a very convincing 90 minute display against Knox. Kicking into the wind in the first half Western's defence soaked up a bit of early pressure to go into the half time break 1 nil. This was courtesy of some good finishing from Reddy who was given a delightful through ball from 1st gamer Wanwong. The second half was all Western who dominated across the entire park with what was really a very convincing display. Western's 2 goals this half were straight from the top drawer that a spectator would have happily paid to see. Parker drilled the ball into the top right corner of the net from a free kick close to the half way line and Daniel's clinical header from a brilliant Wanwong cross left Knox's talented keeper no chance. In other home result the Western United Ladies with only 9 players secured their first point of the season in Div 1 with a very courageous display to draw nil all with Healesville. 2011-05-22 00:07:56 O victorie de Vest din nou la prima # http://www.westernunitedfc.net If you can't understand the title, maybe ask one of the opposition players from Casey, as there was nothing but Romanian heard over the entire 90 minutes. It says that Western won again to stay first on the table. In a very strange sort of encounter, the highly skilled front half of Casey City played very well but their paper thin back four struggled against Western's slick, fast movement and good finishing. At half time it was 2-1 to United, with the boys from the west suprisingly scoring first(!). 2 more second half goals from Hadi Kerbaj, to give him a hattrick, gave United breathing space as it went to 4-1. It didn't end there though, as some good persistence coupled with some of the dodgiest referreeing ever seen gave Casey 2 very late goals to make it 4-3. Luckily for the Western United lads it was too little, too late, as that was the final score and United sit top of the table with maximum points gained from the first 6 games. Michael Devlin scored the other goal, a cracking volley, and Brendan Klinko continued his sparkling form in the centre of midfield, surely moving into strong favouritism for the best and fairest.
